Community Safety
At Neighbourhood Management, we're working closely with the police to reduce all types of crime across the area. We're also aiming to reduce the percentage of residents who are unhappy with the way the area is policed and who experience fear of crime in the area.
Key Priorities 2008 - 2009
Here are some of our priorities for the coming 12 months...
• Communication campaign to raise awareness of the success of neighbourhood policing
• Continue support work with Dorset Police around effective community engagement |
Safer Communities Police Team
The Safer Communities Police Team for Boscombe West and Springbourne has been working hard in the area to keep crime down by ?%. This level of reduction is exceptional and has been achieved by the team working in a different way, focussing on the key issues raised by residents. The approach taken by the team is now informing the countywide roll-out of neighbourhood policing.
The Safer Communities Police Team is made up of:
• PCSO
• PCSO
• PCSO
One of the key messages that came out of the Residents' Survey was that local people are more likely to feel safe and have the confidence to get in touch with the Safer Communities Team if they know more about the team and understand how it operates.
So Neighbourhood Management worked with the Safer Communities Team to produce a series of posters, events and meeting points that introduce members of the Team and what they do, and makes it easier for residents to get in touch by providing contact numbers and names.
PCSO’S Working with Residents through Homewatch Groups SALISBURY ROAD HOMEWATCH GROUP
The Salisbury Road Homewatch Group have shown extraordinary commitment to improving their area socially and environmentally in order to benefit the community as a whole.
Over the past year the residents have worked with numerous agencies including the Council, housing, police and many more in order to take back ownership in their area, thus positively impacting on both the community and its residents in a huge way.
Initially the residents set up a Homewatch group, in conjunction with the Police, to voice their concerns. This meeting has established residents who actively want to make a difference and will assist in any ways possible. An example of this was their support in the organisation of an environmental clean up day by the Neighbourhoods Wardens to improve areas of the road and included identifying the need for the re-surfacing of pavements and re-painting of lines. It proved to be hugely successful with over 150 persons, many of whom were residents, actively contributing and a great deal of community spirit was apparent in the road. Due to the success this cleanup process has now escalated to surrounding roads of Boscombe.
The ongoing commitment of the Salisbury Road Homewatch made UK history by assisting in achieving the first crackhouse closure of an alleyway in the country under the Antisocial Behaviour Act due to its negative impact on the quality of life for residents that lived in the area. This closure has proved extremely successful and quality of life has been improved for all residents concerned. Due to the ongoing work and successes of this Homewatch group they have taken back ownership and pride in their area, which is apparent for all to see. The Safer Neighbourhoods Team for the area fully support this application as Salisbury Road Homewatch Group continues to work with all agencies toward making Boscombe Safer and make Boscombe feel safer.
