Environment

At Neighbourhood Management, we realise how important it is that residents feel good about their local area. We understand the need to deliver street care services and develop good quality open spaces that help create a cleaner, greener, safer environment. We also realise the importance of involving local people in the decision making process and providing 'joined-up' services that, working together, can really make a difference.

Key Priorities 2008 - 2009

Here are some of our priorities for the coming 12 months...

• Continue to support and work with the Boscombe West and Springbourne Neighbourhood Wardens

• Communication campaign to raise awareness of the work happening in the neighbourhood area

• Continue to support and work with The Friends of Boscombe Chime Gardens

• Environment Group – Dates of Next Meetings

Neighbourhood Wardens joint winners in the Neighbourhood Management Awards 2008 – under Partnership Working

The Neighbourhood Wardens role is to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors to the area through implementing environmental improvements, reducing fear of crime and increasing feelings of community confidence and security.   They report an array of issues (such as Highway issues, Lighting problems, Fly Tipping, Littering, Fly Posting reporting and removal, Dog Fouling, Abandoned Vehicles, Recycling concerns, Anti-social behaviour -  Drug Dealing and drinking etc) to various council departments, Police and Fire Service.

The Wardens also run a number of projects including:

  • Environmental Clean up days (Enviro-cleans): a project initiated by  the Neighbourhood Wardens and working in partnership with the Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), Street Services, Cleansing and Highways teams to clear up areas that have been highlighted by residents, council officials and other agencies as needing a facelift, all of which takes place in one day.
  • Piloting a Junior Wardens Scheme, working with local schools, youth clubs and holiday providers. Setting up 10 Home Watch groups in Boscombe and Springbourne in partnership with the PCSO’s.
  • Promoting positive use of parks/green spaces & Diversionary Activities for Young People including: – A Halloween Event run by the Wardens attracted over 300 people and a Christmas event saw over 100 people join in on a cold winters evening.
  • Weekly football training sessions with both boys and girls from a variety of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Anti Dog Fouling Days where they give away free bio-degradable dogs bags.
  • Anti Cigarette Butt and Gum campaign by giving away stub it pouches.  Including obtaining funding to design and distribute cigarette butt and gum pouches in the Boscombe and Springbourne area.

The Wardens project work has resulted in them achieving a National Wardens Award and Joint Winners of the Neighbourhood Management Award 2008.

Spick’n Span After Big Clean

Making sure the town is at its best takes a small army of people and equipment, from neighbourhood wardesn to specialist cleaning contractors, residents and even trading standards officers.

Spring Clean

Families from Boscombe and Springbourne have taken part in a major spring clean of their neighbourhoods.

Equipped with little picks and bin bags, dozens of volunteers joined neighbourhood wardens and the fire and rescue service for the clean-up operations.

Volunteers filled 12 bags with rubbish and leaves in Churchill Gardens, Boscombe at the end of March.  Corporation Road, Lytton Road and Northcote Road in Springbourne were spruced up a few days later – work carried out included mechanical sweeping, drain clearing and the removal of fly tipping.

Street Reps keep an eye on their street!

Do you like to see your street looking clean and tidy?  Do you have a few hours to spare every month?  If so, think about becoming a Street Rep!

Street Reps are the eyes and ears of their street and one of their key roles is to report any work that needs doing in the street to the Neighbourhood Wardens, for example, litter or graffiti that needs removing.

The Street Rep scheme has been running for ? years and there are currently over ? Street Reps in Boscombe West and Springbourne.
