What is Neighbourhood Management?

Neighbourhood Management is a resident-centered scheme to improve the areas of Boscombe West and Springbourne. It is funded by the Government as part of their National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal and began in 2002 and will run until 2009.

The idea is to involve local people in finding long-term solutions to the problems of the area and to work in partnership with all agencies that have an influence.

Neighbourhood Management is managed by a Board and is here to look at issues identified within the Boscombe West and Springbourne areas.

Neighbourhood Management is run by a Board containing eight local residents plus representatives from the Police, Primary Care Trust, Bournemouth Council, Voluntary Sector, Business and Faith communities and an Elected member.

The Neighbourhood Management staff team, who are accountable to the Board, is led by Dawn Bevan, Neighbourhood Manager, and incorporates Christine Rowley, Community Involvement Officer, Cat McMillan, Strategic Development & Research Officer and Rob Adams, Finance and Admin Officer. Click here to find out more about the Neighbourhood Manager and Team.

The Board meetings take place on a monthly basis and are open to observers from the local community. Details of where and when the Board meetings are taking place can be obtained by contacting the Neighbourhood Management offices or by checking out our calendar section which shows planned future meetings. Minutes of these meeting are available to the public and record all decisions taken by the Board.

The Board receives regular reports from their sub-groups and is responsible for the approval of any actions or spend arising from these groups.

Sub-groups were established by the Board to analyse and develop detailed responses to key issues identified by the Board. They report to the Board and have the following remit:

• To bring interested and expert people together.

• To develop expertise in an area.

• To answer key issues and questions set by the Board.

• To gather and examine evidence and baseline data.

• To analyse problems and causes and propose leverage funded initiatives in response, to be approved by the Board.

• To monitor and evaluate these initiatives and report to the Board.

• To develop standards and service level agreements (SLAs) with service providers, to be approved by the Board.

• To monitor services and SLAs and report to the Board.

• To devise long term strategies for approval by the Board.

• To contribute to the development of the following years delivery plan for that theme area.

• To ensure implementation of the current year’s delivery plan for that theme area.

Sub-Group meetings are not open meetings but if you wish to find out more about the activities of the sub-groups please contact the Neighbourhood Management offices.

Several forums, groups and schemes have been established with the assistance of Neighbourhood Management to encourage community involvement. These include Tenants Forum, Street Representatives, Traders Associations, and Youth forum. To find out more about Community Involvement click here.
